Dear Fellow Sangha Members and Dharma Students,

Once again Kim and I are sending you this letter to ask for your financial support for our beloved Lama Kathy Wesley.

As you may know, Lama Kathy devotes herself full-time to her dharma work. Much of her time is spent teaching and supporting those of us who attend Columbus KTC – providing dharma talks on Sunday mornings, guiding us during private interviews, directing practice and study activities at our center, advising the Columbus KTC Board and countless other related activities. Both Kim and I have benefited greatly from Lama Kathy’s instructions and support for our dharma practice over the years and this may be true for you, too. Without our financial support, Lama Kathy may need to seek employment in the private sector and, if forced do so, her accessibility to us would be markedly curtailed.

The Columbus KTC provides a monthly allowance for Lama Kathy which covers her housing costs. Beyond this, Lama Kathy relies on donations to cover other expenses such as medical and dental insurance, automotive maintenance and insurance, clothing and food. Currently, her annual non-reimbursed medical costs over the last three years averaged $11,000 per year. While Lama Kathy received donations from students living outside of the central Ohio area earlier this year, this money has been exhausted after paying recent medical bills.

Many churches, synagogues and other religious institutions are able to offer their spiritual leaders – ministers and rabbis and so on – a full-time salary. It is my wish and Kim’s that one day our center will be to do the same for Lama Kathy. In the meantime, we are asking all of our dharma friends to please practice the paramita of generosity and send Lama Kathy whatever financial support you can. Through a similar fundraising effort for Lama Kathy last year, our sangha raised nearly $7000. We hope our community can not only meet but exceed this amount this year. Alternatively, you may want to consider sending Lama Kathy a monthly pledge. My wife and I make a monthly pledge to Lama Kathy. We found this method is easier on our budget and enabled us to make a larger donation than if we did so in one lump sum. Monthly pledges can be easily set-up through your on-line banking service.

Unfortunately, donations to Lama Kathy are not tax-deductible; however, all donations accompanied by a sender’s name and postal address will be acknowledged by postal mail with a thank you message.
