Friday Evening Public Talk

Finding Wisdom In Compassion: The Buddhist Path
According to Buddha’s teaching on the Four Noble Truths, suffering is part of life; it has a cause; it has a solution; and there is a path that leads to the end of suffering. When the causes of suffering are discussed, selfishness, or ego-clinging, emerges as a root cause of the suffering we encounter. But how can we uproot ego-clinging? In this talk, Khenpo Rinpoche will describe the role of love and compassion (Relative Bodhicitta) and wisdom (Ultimate Bodhicitta) as steps on the path to liberation.

Naturally Liberating Whatever You Meet: Instructions to Guide You on the Profound Path
In 1958, Communist armies invaded Kham in Tibet, destroying monasteries and imprisoning monks. The previous summer, Khenpo Gangshar foresaw that the difficulties in Tibet were going to escalate. To help dharma pr
actitioners in Tibet progress rapidly on the path so they could meet these challenges skillfully, he gave this teaching on Naturally Liberating Whatever You Meet. Thrangu Rinpoche, Chogyam Trungpa Rinpoche, and Khenpo Karthar Rinpoche received this profound cycle of teachings, which describe how to progress rapidly by engaging with practice whatever happens to you. It includes advice on the wisdom of emotions, and taking the bardo state as well as sleep as the path.
Only a few people who actually received this teaching remain alive; it is a rare opportunity for us to host Khenpo Karthar Rinpoche, who received this teaching, and who can transmit to us the wisdom of being able to work with whatever comes to us in life.

Columbus KTC will host a Nyungne Retreat, Led by Lama Tsultrim Yeshe, the weekend of July 23rd, 2011.
A Nyungne is designed to purify negative karma and accumulate merit and wisdom and is a very good experience. It is a two day practice focusing on the generation of the bodhichitta attitude, the strict keeping of vows, and the recitation of the 1000-arm Chenrezig sadhana. Chenrezig is the Bodhisattva of loving kindness and compassion. It is said that accomplishing the Nyungne even once can sever the currents leading to the rebirth in the lower realms of existence.
The retreat will be led by Lama Tsultrim Yeshe. Lama Tsultrim Yeshe completed the first three-year retreat at Karme Ling led by Khenpo Karthar Rinpoche, and took monastic vows with His Eminence Tai Situ Rinpoche in 1994. Lama Yeshe lives in Wisconsin, and teaches at Kagyu centers throughout North America. Over the years, he has led many Nyungne retreats.
The retreat will open with a public talk in the Columbus KTC shrine room on Friday July 22 at 7:00pm. Lama Tsultrim Yeshe will review the history and structure of a Nyungne Retreat and discuss the merit generated by this inspiring practice. The public talk is a wonderful way to learn about the retreat and is recommended for anyone who is participating in the retreat for the first time. It’s also good to come if you are just curious to learn more about this important Kagyu practice.
The retreat will be held at Columbus KTC and is open to all who have taken Buddhist Refuge Vows. It begins on Saturday, July 23, at 6 am with Sojang Pure Conduct Vows, breaks for lunch at noon, and ends at 6 pm. Clear liquids are permitted after lunch. On Sunday, the practice begins again at 6 am. All day Sunday until Monday morning at 8 am, no food or drink is permitted with one exception. Lama Tsultrim Yeshe stated people with a medical condition can take their medication with a small amount of water. Additionally, there is no speaking other than during the sadhana/mantra practice. The practice resumes on Monday at 5 am and ends at 8 am with breakfast. In the public talk on Friday night, Lama Tsultrim Yeshe he will address the concern many people have about fasting during the public talk on Friday night.
While this retreat is traditionally two and a half days long, participants may choose to attend for just one day or even a half day. If you’ve never participated in a Nyungne before, this is a wonderful opportunity – even for part of a day. If you decide to come for only part of the retreat, be sure to come after the Sojang Pure Conduct Vows are taken. If you take these vows, they
must be observed from sunrise to sunrise.
Costs vary depending on the length of time you choose to participate. Due to the nature of the retreat, people are permitted to stay overnight at Columbus KTC. Many people find it easier to keep their vows by staying at the center for the entire retreat. Please note, you must provide your own bedding. If you wish to stay at the center, please mention this when you register.
