Free Meditation Classes at Columbus Karma Thegsum Choling

Meditation (called “Shinay” in Tibetan, “Shamata” in Sanskrit, and “Calm Abiding” in English)is a basic Buddhist practice. Its aim is to calm and stabilize the mind, so that we can think, speak and act from a place of mindfulness, and gradually cultivate a sense of inner peace.

The Columbus KTC offers three opportunities to learn Shinay Meditation:

* 10 a.m. Sundays: “Introduction to Meditation” class

* 10 a.m. to 12 noon First Saturday of the Month “Meditation Practice and Study Group”

* Individual instruction by appointment

Introduction to Meditation is a one-hour class taught at 10 a.m. most Sunday mornings in the Library at Columbus KTC. During this class, a brief introduction to the KTC and its activities is offered, followed by a basic-but-complete instruction on how to do quiet sitting meditation. After the instruction, students sit briefly in meditation with the instructor and then can ask questions about the practice. Some visitors find it useful to attend this class several Sundays in a row so they can hear the instruction from different teachers and ask questions about their daily home-based meditation practice.

Meditation Practice and Study Group is a two-hour session conducted from 10 a.m. to 12 noon on the First Saturday of each month. The session includes a short 30-minute sitting, an opportunity for group or individual practice interviews with a trained Meditation Instructor, and group discussion of some aspect of meditation practice, such as Cultivating Mindfulness, Compassion in Meditation Practice, Insights, and Working Through Difficulties in Meditation.

These two Meditation classes are free of charge. However, donations are always cheerfully accepted!
